“I am completely in favor in principle. It is an excellent idea, but I will give a final opinion after consulting the experts from this area and finance experts. I think that it needs to be studied. In principle I am totally in favor”, Berisha declared.
The General Secretary of the International Union for Telecommunication, Hamadoun Toure, who is visiting Tirana to discuss with the Albanian government about the development of technology and information and the expansion of wideband internet left even less hopes for Kosovo to use Albania’s phone prefix. The International Telecommunication Union, where Mr. Toure is a General Secretary, is the only institution that sets the phone codes for every country of the world.
“It would be a very serious precedent if a Parliament decides to sue a new code for its country. We set the codes based on the UN decisions. When a country is recognized by the UN, we give the code immediately, as we did with Southern Sudan only two hours after the UN published the declaration. We will do the same with Kosovo. There are more than 6 billion cell phones in the world and each of them is unique, hence I think that the usage of a code from another country will cause many technical problems”, Toure declared.
As regards the future project for a digital Albania and expanding the wideband internet in our country, the General Secretary of the International Union of Telecommunication seemed very enthusiastic considering as brilliant the idea of PM Berisha’s for creating a tax free area in Tirana dedicated to technology. According to him, this was the base of success of technology in the US, Southern Korea, Japan and Australia.
