Dear fellow journalists and worried citizens around the world

We inform you that two days ago, on 28th of May 2013, our colleague, journalist from the daily newspaper Tomislav Kezarovski was arrested and currently he is in custody. Tomorrow, on 31st of May 2013 the editors, journalists, photo reporters and everyone else working in the Macedonian media will protest in front of the Criminal court in Skopje, the institution that assigned custody of 30 days for Kezarovski.

The way that our colleague was arrested, with use of force and in front of his minor children in a situation when he didn’t resist, is a scandal and the decreed custody of 30 days is a direct attack, not only for Kezarovski, but for the media freedom and the freedom of speech in our country. The situation is even more alarming if we take into the consideration the fact that the only question that the investigative judge asked Kezarovski was to announce the source of his story published 5 years ago, in 2008 in the newspaper Reporter 92, that doesn’t exist anymore. Kezarovski was arrested because he allegedly neglected an identity of a protected witness, someone who is later discovered that is fake witness. Afterwards, the witness himself, in a public speech, confessed that he gave a false statement because he was pressured by the secret police services.

It is very unclear why Kezarovski is arrested five years after he published the story? It is more than urgent for the institutions, the Criminal court, the Ministry for internal affairs and the Public prosecutor to answer this question! We also ask from them to immediately withdraw the custody for our colleague!

The situation regarding media freedom in Macedonia is more than concerning! We don’t want to fall even more down in the rankings in the reports of the international organizations that are measuring the freedom of media and freedom of speech. Our jouranlists at the moment are under terribly strong psychological and economic pressure and in a state of constant threat and intimidation by officials. We certanly do not want our country to become one where journalist go to jail because they have been doing what’s best for the public interest. Help us spread the words!
