Kosovo Assembly on Wednesday’s plenary session that was the last spring session has approved the draft law on the protection of journalistic sources, proposed by the Kosovo’s Independent MP also a former broadcast journalist, Alma Lama. The result of this bill vote was 68 votes in favor, 4 against and 1 abstention. Meanwhile, MPs from LDK, Arben Gashi, Haki Demolli, Sadri Ferati and Lutfi Zharku, voted against it as well as Rasim Demir from a minorities coalition ‘VAKAT’ abstained

Alma Lama has said that the law already approved by Parliament provides broad protection allowing journalists to protect their confidential sources, “therefore ‘escaping’ to be forced to reveal their source to justice.”

“We are so well protected except reporters and other media professionals including all persons working because they have information about resources. The law protects media newsrooms and journalists’ homes by the raids, police bans journalists to get materials, and applies even in cases when the state of emergency is declared, which means that some human rights are meant to be suspended, “said Lama.

According to her, this law is a very good contribution in the field of media, especially for Investigative journalism, which often rely on confidential sources. Unlike law, according to its author, Alma Lama has been prepared taking into account the best models of the EU countries, as well as the recommendations of the Council of Europe and the European Federation of Journalists. Also, the association of Professional Journalists of Kosovo supported the bill on journalistic source.
