Kosovo’s independent journalist Vedat Xhymshiti, during his recent years has been struggling with the freedom of movement. He was subsequently deprived not just from the fact that several Middle Eastern countries didn’t recognise his Kosovo’s (passport!) travel documents, which are issued from Kosovo authorities, but indeed also some of the EU embassies have subsequently deprived his freedom of movement. Therefore, journalist Xhymshiti on February 13th, 2015 decided to launch a Petition-Campaign through the online platform ‘Change.org’ addressing to the Albanian Republic Institution of Parliament, President and the Prime Minister, demanding a chance to be granted an Albanian Passport from the Albanian authority in Tirana capital.
So as he says “… to be able to exercise my professional commitment, there where the people need it, … to give voice to the voiceless to witness, document and report what’s happening out there…” he could than freely travel worldwide.
The campaign “Give me Freedom Albania” is launched already and it is written in Albanian language. A english translated version is available below for English audience, those of you with good will and aim to support the freedom of movement of a journalist, please read and sign the petition.
Dear representatives of the Albanian people,
Dear Mr. President;
Dear Mr. Prime Minister,
I am a freelance photojournalist. During recent five years I have been reporting from the territories involved in peaceful and armed rebellion, mainly from the Middle Eastern desert. I am a citizen of Kosovo, but it has caused a lot of trouble because most of the countries where I have to try to be out there and report, do not recognise Kosovo passport.
My professional commitment has been published in various European, American and Albanian news magazines and broadcasters, such as Der Spiegel, NYTimes, Corbis Images, Le Monde, AP TVNews, Albanian writing news magazines such as Journal JNK, Shekulli, Mapo, Shqip, Express etc.
A war which is knocking on the door of Europe, is a place where I want to go witness, document and report on what is happening there, but this appears to be impossible since Ukraine does not recognise Kosovo and its traveling documents, which I posses.
Therefore, please make it possible to grant me back my freedom of movement, so I can be able to give my professional contribution to the people that have a need for it. To give voice to the voiceless. Please grant me Albanian Citizenship and its following traveling documents.
- Giving the press its freedom of movement, is in your hand.
- Therefore, please do so!
- Humanly yours, Vedat Xhymshiti
